Google To Help You Monitor Your Power Usage

Google unveiled the plans for PowerMeter. A program to help you monitor your power usage right from your iGoogle homepage.

“Google PowerMeter, currently a prototype product, will allow you to see your own energy usage information and help you improve your efficiency in a variety of ways. The first way you’ll see this tool in action is through a secure iGoogle gadget that will let you safely and privately browse your home electricity usage.”

Some of Google’s employees have been beta-testing a prototype of the PowerMeter with interesting results from saving 13% by switching their lights to CFLs and by saving $3k a year with upgraded appliances. One employee noticed high power usage by a stuck toaster oven and prevented a potential fire.

Utility companies, Government agencies, smart meter and other device manufacturers are encouraged to contact Google.org to work with Google on this project.
