Google’s Clean Energy by 2030

Google’s energy team is dicussing ways that we could reduce our fossil feul use by the year 2030. The team led by Jeffery Greenblatt has developed a proposal that would wean us off of coal and oil for electrical generation and reduces car dependence on oil by 40%.

The Clean Energy 2030 proposal is to stimulate debate and we invite you to take a look and comment – or offer an alternative approach if you disagree.

This 22 year proposal could generate millions of green jobs and produce savings of billions of doallars.

The plan starts with three basic steps.

  • Reduce demand by doing more with less

Reducing energy demand through energy efficiency – adopting technologies and practices that allow us to do more with less.

  • Develop renewable energy that is cheaper than coal (RE<C)

Google’s Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal (RE<C) initiative has invested over $45 million in startup companies developing breakthrough technologies in wind, solar and geothermal renewable energy sources. Google’s is calling for massive investments by private companies and individuals into new renewable energy technologies.

  • Electrify transportation and re-invent our electric grid

RechargeIT is a Google.org initiative that aims to reduce CO2 emissions, cut oil use, and stabilize the electrical grid by accelerating the adoption of plug-in electric vehicles. We have a demonstration fleet of plug-ins at our headquarters in Mountain View, and we’re collecting and posting data on plug-in performance, investing in innovative technologies, and advocating for the passage of important legislation. Our vision is that one day thousands of cars will be plugging into a greener grid.

This proposal is just one of many ways Google is just one of the things Google is doing to help our climate by going green. I will be blogging about some of Google’s other green projects soon.
